A baby Red-ear slider in hibernation will...
- be hiding in deep mud underwater, or be in a specially packed box in a controlled temp habitat
- be at about 40-50F
- be all tucked into its shell and rarely, if ever, move
- resist having you pull one of its legs out, then will pull it tightly back in

Unfortunately, many people who think their turtle is 'hibernating' this time of year are just keeping their turtles too cold to be active, but too warm to hibernate. Sadly, many of these turtles starve slowly and die.

Turtles that are really hibernating will emerge when the hibernacula (space it is hibernating in) warms up enough to stimulate their metabolism. This usually occurs when water temps get and stay over about 55F for a bit.

If your turtle is hibernating, just boost the water temps to 75-80F- the proper water temps for the species.

If it is outside, it will hibernate until the temperature is consistently above 50 degrees. If it is inside, you need to get a tank heater and get the water at least 65 degrees. You also should provide at least 11 hours of artificial light per day

i turn on my lamp 24 hrs a day to make the cage warm. mine didn't go into hibernation, i guess he's thinking its summer due to the lamp heat, or it's just global warming....
