Hi, I have a Siemens 4200 Modem and a Netgear Internet Wireless Router. How can I test if these are working?

Also, I have noticed that my internet gateway is running at 812, 000 packets sent/receive and my computer is only recieving/sending 24,000. Is this right?

Also when I am downloading something I only get about 7kbs connection, how can I make it better?

Thanks

Ok, that's seriously messed up...

You need to lock down that computer, clean it out and set up some new habits, because it sounds like there's some spyware / viruses in your computer using your 'net connection. Your computer could even be one of the zombified computers used to send spam - not good.

(You might want to save a copy of this page and e-mail it to yourself)

1) Disconnect your computer from the internet - unplug the cable / cord that connects it to the modem / router. Keep it unplugged.

2) Go over to a friend's house

3) Use his / her connection to download these programs and burn them to CD:
Antivirus - ClamWin - http://www.clamwin.com/
Anti-spyware - Spybot Search & Destory - http://www.spybot.info/en/mirrors/index.html
Firewall - Zonealarm - http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp
General Cleaner - Ccleaner - http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/

4) Keep *your* computer off the internet

5) Reboot your computer into safe mode - when it's just starting to reboot, tap the F8 key until it shows you a screen that gives you the option to use "Safe Mode" (F8 is in the row of keys that run across the top of your keyboard)

6) Put the disk into your CD / DVD drive and install the programs one by one. You will probably have to reboot - just remember to ALWAYS go into safe mode each time.

7) Run Spybot S&D and scan your computer. Remove anything it finds. Repeat for ClamWin and Ccleaner.

8) Install Zonealarm and let it run.

9) Take a deep breath and reconnect to the net.
This will cause a few things to happen:
Loads of programs will try to connect to the internet - and for once you're told about it! The firewall blocks them until you either say it's ok, or agree that it should be blocked. Read through what each one is, and use your cautious judgement on what to allow.

10) Run the programs you just installed and make sure they update themselves.

11) I highly recommend you disconnect the internet after all the updates are done and RE-scan your computer. Run the Immunize option in Spybot S&D too.

12) Better habits:
I'm almost 100% sure you're using the browser that came with your computer - Internet Explorer. It's big, slow, out of date, insecure, inflexible and can be hard to use.
Try Firefox for about an hour a day... for about a week. If you run into any issues, go onto the MozillaZine forums - http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewforum.php?f=38 and either search for what's going on, or ask a question.
Google is also a very good resource.
