Step away from the classics: give me modern and recent books that my middle and high school boys would enjoy reading. They're not big fans of Harry Potter or Lemony Snicket, which I thought would be good.

Daniel Pinkwater's "The Snark-Out Boys And The Bacconburg Terror" is a fun read for the 12-14 year olds.

Donald Westlake's Dortmunder series is a great one. I reccomend, "Jimmy The Kid" for the youngsters and "Why Me?" for the older crowd. In "Jimmy The Kid" Dortmunder's team of crooks use a book to figure out how to kidnap a child; the only problem is the kid is too smart for them. "Why Me?" has Dortmunder making the biggest heist of his carreer, the Byzantine Fire. Now the heat is on and everybody is unhappy at the crook who made off with the famous ruby. Can Dortmunder unsteal the gem before he gets burned?

Terry Pratchett and Neil Giaman's "Good Omens" is a laugh riot.

Looking for something more serious? Try Tony Hillerman's "The Ghostway" or Douglas Preston's "The Codex" for the older students.

James Patterson has a series I believe it's called Maximum Overdrive that is geared toward teens. From things I have read about it, it's pretty popular.
