you may of fractured it. my sister triped over a scrabble box and broke her toe even though it was nothing. if you dont' have the money, wear open toed shoes, but ones that will cover the base of the toe so you dont' stub it again. ice it for 15 minutes 4 times a day when you are on the computer or watching tv.

I like peanut's answer - sounds like fun! While you are beginning your "beer therapy" :) Do the following:

1. Take 800mg of ibuprofen (skip this if you plan to drink any alcoholic beverages - really, it is too large a load for your liver and kidneys)

2. Lightly, but firmly tape the toe to the neighboring toe(s). This will help prevent further injury to the toe. BTW this would be the only thing that a doctor would do for your toe unless the bone happens to protrude through the skin.

3. Elevate the affected foot above the level of your heart whenever possible. This allows the fluids that accumulate around an injury to drain back into your circulatory system, rather than pooling around the affected tissues and causing pain.

4. Apply ice packs for 15 minute intervals. 15 minutes with ice, 15 - 30 minutes without ice, 15 minutes with ice....etc. Be sure to put a thin towel between the ice and your skin. You don't need frostbite on top of another injury!!

5. Stay off the affected foot as much as possible for the next day or so.

Good luck - I hope you feel better soon. It is not fun to have a broken toe, but if treated correctly it should heal rather quickly and shouldn't leave any lasting effects.

I've worked in Orthopaedic Surgery for five years and although I am not an MD I can tell you that FAWN's answers above are spot on.

Not only that, but I've broken my toe before myself, so I know first hand.

1. Ibuprofen for inflammation and pain.
2. Tape to immobilize
3. Elevate
4. Ice
5. Remain non-weight bearing as tolerated.

In addition, however, you should also know what to do if your condition worsens.

READ the article below. It tells you when you should seek medical care.

GO TO THE DOCTOR!!! You may have broken your toe! If it heals wrong then you will have trouble with it for the rest of your life. Oh and in rare cases a broken bone can turn into gang green (basicaly it dies and rots) and if that happens your life can be in danger from blood poisoning and they will have to cut your toe off. SO, don't put it off any longer. See a doctor.
In the meantime, get some tape. Like bandage tape or paper tape, something that lets air in and out and tape your toe to the toe next to it to help straighten it out. Your healthy toe will act like a splint and help your toe heal.
But really, if you are that much pain only a doctor can help!!
