He seems to be eating things on the rocks, but I don't see anything. He's so beautiful, I don't want him to starve to death.

There are different types and different sizes. Most are very small (about the size of a period) so chances aren't good that you'll see many. You should have at least a 40-50 gallon tank with lots of live rock that's been running for about 6 months so your mandarin (actually a dragonette, but lots of people call them "gobies") has enough food to survive.

A manderin will eat any small creatures living in your tank.
ie. copods, small worms, baby shrimp...
Your tank does not have to be large but should contain plenty of live rock and should be matured at least 5 months.
Pods look like tiny dots(usualy white) and can be seen on the glass, when they are on the live rock and sand and coral... you would need Superman vision to see them. they are also free swimming in the water.
If you look at the live rock long enough (in a well established tank) you will see all sorts of tiny critters running around and in and out of the rocks, Your Manderine will eat all of those too.

If you have plenty of them you should see some trapped in your filter media. They are light colored and sort of look like little shrimp.
