Societies in different countries have different way for it. In old days child marriage was common in India. There were not that much divorces as well. The age limit 18, I think was a general guidance and should be a strict law. Only the parents know how much their kid is grown. Some are not mentally fit for marriage even after 81.

The idea is that you don't want you government making subjective evaluations of individuals. I think a better law would be if you are living with your parents, regardless of age, you need thier permission.

I think the age here in the US is 16.. not 18.. but I think it is one of those laws left up to the states. Before the PC movement it was common to get married at ages 13 and up.

I do agree that some people are unfit for marriage regardless of age. I believe that some sort of mandatory class or counseling should take place before the issuance of a marriage license. Most churches already provide this type of service for free.

Not all parents are good judges either.

Keep in mind that in older societies, it was beneficial to marry children off early. In farming societies and others, females couldn't contribute much to the running of the farm in terms of physical labor, so they were often just another mouth to feed, and so the family wanted to marry them off (hence we had dowry's and other incentives, not to mention young ages).

In the industrialized world it's not as much of an issue. The low divorce rate you mention I don't think you can attribute to young ages of marriage as much as to just the society norms of divorce (or being against it).

As far as stability, who's to judge? Unstable children often have unstable parents. The best judger is the spouse-to-be, who is the one who will have to live with that person.

In my state it costs 25.00 dollars for a license to drive.

it costs 5.00 dollars for a marriage license, and there isn't even a test to indicate if you could do it.

Now that is what i find ridiculous.
