because in the SH*T bettman era, most of the seats are puchased in blocks by corporations (or given to them for corporate sponsorship programs) and the execs couldn't care less than going to games....hence all the empty seats and sad "fans" who hope to afford to go to ONE game a year -- instead of a family vacation !!!!!
thanks bettman, you pipsqueak with a napolean complex

Due to the immense popularity of hockey in Toronto the ticket prices are very high. Which is why a lot of the fans will travel to away games since it actually costs about the same to go to another city for a few days to watch a game there. My guess is that they are just out of the seats when you noticed it.
Toronto seriously has the best fans in the NHL, I can't imagine them turning on their team just because they lost a few games, unlike some of the people above me. You support your team no matter what, I would have thought that Maple Leafs fans would know that (Philadelphia certainly doesn't)
I should probably add that I'm a Pens fan myself, but I always try to make it to their games against Toronto, since it is a lot of fun hanging out with their fans.

The guy with the answer of season ticket holders don't go to games is right. I hate to tell all you haters out there that the Toronto Maple Leafs actually sell out each night(including season ticket seats). And being a true Leaf fan it doesn't matter how much the seats are or what there home record is we will always pay the money to go anywhere and cheer on our Blue and White. So please don't hate us.

Unfortunatley...they are actually sold out the whole time.....they have never under sold tickets.
What you see is one of these scenarios: 1) they have not showed up to the game yet 2) season ticket holders have not attended 3) scalpers couldn't get rid of their tickets 4) either using the washroom or getting a beer
The moment toronto had a team they have sold out every game in their history. It will take them to miss one game to break it and another team would have to sell out their games for 80 years to even match them (and only Colorado sells out their seasons next to the leafs)

The seats are sold, but many season ticket holders just go to the games they want, and some are waiting for a winner. Season tickets in Toronto become part of a familys estate, and are held onto forever.

It's always sold out and it looks full to me when I'm there. At the start of the game, there's a lot of empty seats particularly in the platinum section but it fills up as the game progresses. They were probably at the concession stands.

it cant be because people don't want to go. i took a tour of maple leaf gardens and they said they have been sold out every night for the past 20 years and that there is a waiting list of a couple of years for tickets or something. maybe lots of people had to go to the bathroom. oh yeah and there is a 20 year waiting list for season tickets
go wings!!!!!!!!!!!

There aren't, every game is sold out.
You probably just noticed this at the beginning of a period, where as Canadians, everyone is getting beer. After 5 min into each period, all the seats are full

All tickets are sold out. But not every seat is occupied. Management does not care (some revenue lost from less food sales).
