I don't know of anyone who shifts to nuetral while at a red light, especially with an automatic transmission, stick shift I guess is up to the driver.

Holding the car in gear with the clutch disengaged (clutch pedal pushed in) will cause excessive wear to the throwout bearing. The throwout bearing is the bearing which is in between the clutch fork (which moves the clutch in and out to disengage it) and the clutch itself. Replacing it involves removing the transmission, so while the throwout bearing is pretty cheap, the labor in replacing it is not.

Just be observant. Know what the light is doing. If the light is about to change, and you will only be there for a short time, by all means, keep it in gear. If you just missed the green, go ahead and shift the car into neutral, and give the clutch a rest. I don't think I know anyone who got into an accident because they were in neutral at a light and were not ready to 'take off' to avoid someone.

This is a preference of the driver. Most drivers will keep it in gear while at the light. (How is your clutch leg?) I have never heard of a definitive on it for in a car. But, when I took the motorcycle safety course, I was told to always stay in 1st gear at a stop in case I heard the scary sound of brakes from someone that looked up and found out that I was sitting still. Strictly your call.

Interesting question. I was told by a Driver's Ed instructor that I should always wait at the red light in first gear. I argued that it was safer to wait in neutral. She said that being in neutral would slow me down when the light did turn green and that in the mean time I should be ready to accelerate out of harms way. (like if I was about to be rear ended, I should avoid the accident by driving out into oncoming traffic)
I humoured her and passed, but I believe that if the clutch slipped or broke or that I fell asleep or whatever, I would rather not lurch out into traffic.

While you COULD be in first gear while at a red light by keeping the clutch in, driving like that on a regular basis would prematurely wear out your throw out bearing, To replace this necesitates removal of your transmission. Put it in neutral unless you're either rich, or love laying under cars with transmissions on your chest.

As far as I know there is nothing in the 'Law' to prevent you from doing it either way, however, I think just pushing in the clutch is ok if you are just stopped for a short time, if stopped for a long time, yes, then put in neutral and let the clutch out.

You don't HAVE to be in neutral, but you SHOULD be. Being in gear when you need not to be will wear out your clutch faster than if you were to be on neutral.

nicely shall we upload a third project on your combination... as you concepts-set a yellow or purple mild which you intend on combating and sitting for a minute at you enable off the gasoline and shift your automobile out of drugs devoid of the grab, because of the fact it very quite does this (i'm no mechanic yet i'm advantageous somebody will let us know if this has an unfavourable influence on your automobile). then you idle out of drugs on the stoplight - saving positioned on on your throwout bearing/cable and your left foot. and you press and launch the grab only as quickly as to shift and force remote from the sunshine. that's what I used to do in my 'ninety 4 mustang because of the fact the pedal became into so heavy. I usually ought to shift and be off the sunshine in the past the different automobile next to me and while i became into utilising that automobile I many times prayed for somebody to rear-end me and complete my automobile so i ought to get a clean one. however the call seems to be out on that one so take what you will. till you're utilising a triple-disc nevertheless, I consider maximum that it comes right down to decision.
