He reapplies after doing another few semesters at the other Catholic school and eventually gets in. Then he gets on the football team there but does not actually get to play in a real game until the very last one when they were already winning.

Which time? I believe he gets turned down like 3 times before he is finally accepted the 4th time. After the final letdown, he crumples the paper and throws it to the floor. He nearly gives up right there. That might be the point in the movie when the black guy he works with at the stadium reminds him that he's had two years of a good education and it hasn't been a waste. I recommend renting the movie. It is one of my all-time favorites. I bet I've watched it a hundred times.
