Someone who is wise is considered to be wise by others. They are wise enough to know they dont have to prove it.

Someone who espouses (or professes) to be wise, generally is not and will shortly prove it so.

Then again, if he who professes to be wise really is, then he is a fool for being conceited about his wisdom and is therefore not wise.

Taking it out of context, I'd say that it's pertaining to the fact that people who are actually wise know how little they know in relation to how much they still have to learn and therefore would not claim themselves to be wise. So people who boast wisdom are actually advertising their ignorance.

To me it says that those with superiority complexes often make fools of themselves. Their desire to "educate" those they feel are ignorant or inferior to themselves only illuminates their own narrow minded views or sad need to view themselves as better then everyone around them.

how offensive to quote the bible in a forum for questions of philosophy. i mean, you may as well quote another verse that expresses something similar: 'o lord, we cover ourselves in the paupers rags of philosophy while turning away from the truth'.

anyway, as my other major was comparitive religion i shall interpret (prophesy to me, LORD!) - its a swipe at philosophers and thinkers who express opinions contrary to christianity, the 'truth'. other than that meaning you could extract something from the context and the greek text but i couldn't be bothered at the moment...
