We know that thoughts are processed in the brain. Since the brain is a physical body part just like your stomach, liver, and lungs are it is essential that the brain be healthy for optimal function. For example, if your lungs were unhealthy due to cigarette smoking your breathing would be more difficult. In the same way, your brain if it is unhealthy, can cause your emotions (by chemical imbalances) to be unhealthy. However, due to traumatic experiences it causes chemicals your brain needs to function to be used up more rapidly than normal causing an imbalance. Optimal health then means having both a healthy brain (by exercise, good diet, vitamins) and optimal thinking (positive thoughts). Therefore, which one of these do you think is the ultimate cause of your negative feelings and/depression?

Negative feelings follow a chemical imbalance. Correct the imbalance and the feelings disappear.

Interesting argument, but I think today's chemical-only approach to mental illness negates the environmental factors at work.
A person's social support plays a big role.

Notice that depression became rampant just about the same time antidepressants went mainstream. We're simply highlighting a very common human condition... if that many people are ill, we need to declare a state of emergency. And, we need to focus more on prevention instead of managing many little symptoms.

Chemical imbalances cause negative feelings -- although there are some people who have negative feelings and don't have a chemical imbalance --- they are just negative people

personally my belief is some people are born with depression (chemical imbalance) caused by genetics, and some people don't have that born depression, but are just depressed by circumstances like people dying, finances or whatever. and the ones worst off were born with depression + have bad circumstances.

i think psychiatry has a lot to learn about this though. they don't seem really sure about what causes depression... they say it all comes from birth & genetics, but i think depression is either very over-diagnosed now, or this world is very messed up and it's causing people to be depressed in large numbers.

i do believe poor diet and exercise is a factor but i also believe some is hereditary. take for instance the person with schizophrenia. chances of their off springs having it are great. i have seen that first hand. (i work in mental health). dopamine is believed to be the cause for schizophrenia. well anyway i can go on and on but interesting fact. did you know that there is something in cigarettes that ease the affects of schizophrenia!
