I'm Norwegian, but i never heard about that myth...
Maybe it is a mix up of this:
The mythology says that Ymer, a giant, was the first living creature in the universe. When he died, his blood became the oceans, his meat the land, his knuckles mountains, his hair trees and grass AND his skull became the sky.
Thunder has do with Tor, a God in the mythology. When Tor travels over the sky, it sounds like thunder. (Thunder in Norwegian is named after Tor: Torden.)
