I am solid on the war side of this; the love aspects I am not.

I reccomend the works of Bernard Cornwell for historical battles. Cornwell is most famous for his stories of the Napoleonic wars (featuring his characters Richard Sharpe and Patrick Hogan). Cornwell is a serious researcher into the history of the battles he describes; but he does change a few facts to make room for his characters in the action. The "Sharpe" series is over 20 books now and chronicles Sharpe's rise through the ranks of the British army including a number of books about his exploits in India before he was sent to face the French. This journey is exceptional because Sharpe started as gutter snipe and rose to rank of colonel at time when it took wealth to buy promotion and it did not recognize merrit. There is of course some romantic situations, but I would not qualifiy them with the term love stories.

Cornwell has also done a short series on the U.S. Civil War featuring a Yankee who is fighting for the Confedeates. This series starts with "Copperhead." This series does have more of a romantic theme than the Sharpe's books, but the love story is secondary.

If you like historical novels it's tough to beat Patrick O'brian's Aubrey/Maturin series that begins with "Master and Commander". This is the series that the Russel Crowe movie by the same name is (loosely) based on. The books are way better. The characters and ships are fictional but the naval actions are accurate descriptions real battles and if you like war novels it doesn't get any better than this.

If you like long, epic novels nobody does it better than James Michener. I recommend "Chesapeake", which takes place mainly in Chesapeake bay in New England and spans from colonial to modern times so it includes the Revolutionary and Civil wars. My favorite Michener book is "Hawaii" which begins before the dawn of man and is my favorite novel ever.

Also, I'll second what Kevin said about Cornwell's Richard Sharpe series. This is quality stuff.

I'll second War and Peace, and also add Gone With the Wind. It's not completely historically accurate, but the story is very good.
