Right, left and middle wise and do some thing like make a (as much as I am not a fan of Kennedys) moonshot. I know Bush has said that we should go to Mars, but how about the real deal. THAT would bring Americans together, maybe, unless we are too polarized now.

I can't stop giggling over the answers above. But, I understand what you are saying. I teach dying children. They don't need to leave this world thinking we're all stupid and hopeless. So, I picked out something like the moonshot out of the hat for them to let them know that there will be a future and that, at least some of us, are aiming high. There are lots of disturbed and feeble-minded people out there ready to pounce on anything more progressive than "the world is not flat". But, the space elevator seems to excite every single child like the original moonshot once did. Here's a website with an actual live-time countdown for the first payload up the space elevator:

How about we all put aside this national divisiveness and work together to make this country and this world a better place. How about we each become honestly active and aware in politics and make our elected officials realize the free ride is over? We can all agree to disagree on the small issues and stop letting the spin doctors blow the small ones out of proportion to cover up the big issues..

Congress has just CUT allocations to NASA by billions of dollars. It seems that paying 8.4 billion dollars a month on a useless, unpopular war makes it difficult to spend money on worthwhile programs like manned spaceflight, education, healthcare or anything else that doesn't advance their questionable agenda. Your idea is an excellent one and restores a little bit of hope in the ppl on YA.
