I am in the process of getting a web page. I have received quotes that couldn't be more different. One factor in my final choice will be effective design and search engine priority.

One designer offers web hosting packages the other has quoted to find the most effective web hosting solution for my needs.???????

What do I need to know about hosting???please answer as if I know nothing about it....thank you so much!

What does price have to do with hosting...do I get what I pay for?? what should I be looking for in a hosting service???

Be careful of the "mind crimes" that are on this board - such as "be careful of a US based IP address when you want to be listed in the UK". Your IP address has nothing to do with it - instead it is the TDL (Top Level Domain). Some people on this service hear or read about something and they pass it off as truth without testing.

The only issue you need to know about your host is:

1. Are they reliable (up time)
2. Is the IP address they give you clean?
3. Can they be trusted (do they sell your log files?)

Get a good to great host and also get a server admin too.

Yes your choice of web hosting can affect your ranking in the search engines but only in a few very special circumstances.

For example if your host allocates you an IP address in the US range when you are targeting the UK. Or if your host has a protracted period of downtime that coincides with visits from Googlebot.

Yes, like most things in life, you get what you pay for! Look for a quality hosting service with an active support Forum where you can go for help.

No the web hosting you choose doesn't affect your search engine priority, that all depends on content, keywords & traffic. If you are only looking for a starter web page or a few pages to begin with you can get free hosting with the registration of your domain name from your registrar, if they offer it. And a website builder is usually included to create one on your own. If you haven't registered a domain name or not sure if the one you have in mind is available, then you can search for one on this site: http://www.urdomainstore.com

Paying more for hosting doesn't necessarily mean the more you get. It's best to shop around and start on a small scale and add on as you require.

I don't think web hosting company affect search engine priority. Since you are in the process of getting a web page, it's important to have your site built nice and right which I mean the html code are done correctly. This helps you in a terms with search engine rankings. I should also say keywords, meta tags play important roles in ranking your site.

On the other hand, applying other methods of marketing and advertising to help out your site to be known.

One of the methods I think would help is to get links exchange with other sites.

I'm not sure what type of business your site is but if you think it's similar and non-competitive with my business, we could do links exchange, my business site is http://www.expressimprints.com

One of the companies provides web hosting that I trust is www.godaddy.com

Hope this helps and good luck to you!

not unless they have website submission, find the top 10 search engines and you can usually submit your site for free, there are many other search engines out there but most people use the most popular like yahoo google msn ect.... you cannot pay to have your page highly ranked unless you do pay per click advertising.
I signed up a couple years ago with onthespothosting.net, submitted
my url to the major search engines and set up goolge adwords and yahoo's overature. I get decent traffic but I pay a pretty good amount of money for it, It is said that the more prevalent info on your site will push you up in the ranks, but everything is so saturated nowadays so you probably will not get a relevent spot
hope this helps

A stable hosting is very important, it will affect your seo, if your hosting easy break down, then Search engine can't find your pages, in this case, it will affect your search engine priority.
I am pretty lucky, i got a very good hosting.
It is a cluster failover hosting. That's a new technology.
A cluster is a group of servers networked together to share the work load. Failover is the process of transferring operation of a failed server to a backup server to ensure websites remain online even due to hardware failure or maintenance. Failover is used to host mission critical websites that require constant availability.

You have to compare all the features they offer and the price. So, you need to know what do you need on your web. FYI, usually they have contract like for 6 months, then after that you can change your hosting provider and move your domain over. So, don't be afraid of trying. In the meantime you build your site, you can try it on the cheapest (of course with a good service) one. I recommend 1and1.com. Basically it covers all you need for now.
