They are actually two different words that are spelled exactly the same. "To hang", as in an object, is the physical act of placing an object on something else suspended above ground, such as a painting or a swing. In that case, the past tense is hung.

"To hang", as in execute, is the act of tying a rope around a peson's neck and droping him from the gallows. This is specific to execution of a human. The past tense in hanged.

Great question and a lesson I taught my class recently:

When someone is executed by a rope the past tense of 'hang' is hanged. In all other cases the past tense of 'hang' is 'hung'.

If you want to sound like an old time cowboy say hanged. At dawn, you will be hanged by the neck until daid.

If you want to sound gramatically correct say hung. At dawn, you will be hung by the necj until dead.

Good luck on your hanging. Either way your dead.

both forms could be used, and hung is mostly for objects whereas hanged is used on humans

Hanged is the correct word if you mean to be executed by means of a noose at the gallows.

People are hanged i.e. "Saddam was hanged."

Objects are hung i.e. "I hung the picture on the wall."

Check the Dictionary... You'll find it... they are two different verbs.. trust me...

"Hanged" in that case.
