The nephew of filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola, Nicolas Cage changed his last name so that his acting career would not be chalked up to nepotism.

He chose "Cage" out of admiration for avant-garde musician John Cage, and en homage to comic book hero Luke Cage.

Hi, Nicholas Cage took that name as to not make reference that he is the nephew of Francis Ford Coppola. He wanted to make it one his own merit. He has a bother however that goes by the name of Marc Coppola. He used to be a DJ on q104.3 in NYC and has an extensive carree of his own.

He changed his name because he didn't want to get roles just because of who his uncle is (Francis Ford Copola, in case you didn't know). He wanted to make his own way on his own merit and with such a famous name, he would never be sure if he earned the rolss he got.

probably as not to be so associated with the Coppola side of the family and to make his own name and get famous seemingly without help from his famous family.

I don't remember exactly why he did that, I think it might be his mother's maiden name, but I know that he changed it because he didn't want his career to be built on his name. He wanted his career to be built on his talent.
