my husband thinks i use salt excessively on my food and swears there are health risks, but i need proof. is this true ?? a few years back, i went to the dr. and my blood pressure was so low that if i had been brought in from a car wreck, they would think i was dying. the dr. told me to start eating lots of salt, like bags of chips a day and gatorade. eventually i got used to this and i guess i have a high tolerance for salt now. my blood pressure has been checked several times in the last few months and it is normal. I need advice please !!

Absolutely, too much salt is one of the main causes of high blood pressure. your pressure might be still ok now, but that doesn't mean it can creep up on you. And you know it's a silent killer.
Also the kidneys and the liver have to work too hard. Things do have a way of catching up with you when you get older. And why the doctor told you to eat salty foods it's beyond me. I can see the gatorade but not the chips.

it turns your aorta (primary artery from heart) into a brick, if your aorta can not expand and contract you will die as the aortic pressure is responsible for helping to pump blood around your body and is measured in your blood pressure. You do not build up a tolerance to salt, you're just lucky enough that you haven't damaged yourself enough yet. It also hardens each of your other types of body vessels, not to mention the extra strain from water retention.

Your doctor is an idiot. Get a new one. There are a MILLION other reasons for your blood pressure being low. Did this happen once or regularly with your blood pressure?

If you eat to much salt you will die, if you don't have any you will die, your muscles can not function without it. Don't eat excessive salt, don't add salt to your food after it is on the plate. Get a new doctor not this quack, and ask to see a dietitian as well as have a par-med-x done for a new exercise program. Execute a new exercise program, this is the best way to regulate your blood pressure. And thank your husband for loving you so much.

Do you have other health issues like fatigue? Your Dr. should have done more investigating of the reason for your low bp. What is your last bp reading? I don't think the salt will hurt as long as your not really overdoing it and your bp is not high. I would be more worried about your low bp. Also, if you have salt cravings it could mean low cortisol which also makes your bp very low. Might be worth having checked by your Dr. (Endo would be best).

The biggest health risk with too much salt intake is hypertension(high blood pressure) . But if you have yours checked regularly and it is normal, I wouldn't worry about it.
