Well if you are talking about technical terms to call him, he may be just brown, if he has a brown mane and tale. But if he has a black mane and tale he is a bay. If it is a lighter color, with a mane and tale that is a lighter color than the body then he could be chestnut or sorrel.
If you are talking about breeds, a lot of horse breeds are brown in color. If you send me a picture, or post one, I could tell you what it is right off the bat. If you live in the USA I'd guess he is a quarter horse mix of some sort, or mustang mix. I'm an expert on horse breeds, and could tell you if it is most likely pure or mixed.

You can't tell the breed of a horse by its color. The majority of breeds out there are allowed to be brown -- so it's not like it's unique to any breed. In fact, chances are good that it doesn't belong to just one particular breed. It's probably just a regular horse, or possibly a mix of a few breeds, but not a purebred.

I have no idea what kind of horse you have and the color is no indication of breed. As for brown colors, there's bay (medium to dark brown), bright bay (copper brown, often with black muzzle and stockings), near black. These are shades of brown. Chestnut is a reddish shade and is not bay. Bays often have black socks or stockings (although these can be white) and always have black manes & tails. A black stripe down the back means the horse is a buckskin, not a bay. Do you have any other questions I can answer for you?

DUH!! IT'S A BROWN HORSE.
Sorry, I just couldn't resist. The color alone will not tell you. It will depend on other things like the build of the horse, conformation, head, etc. best advice is to get a horse book from the library or look up different horses on google and compare your horses's appearance to the pictures.

If you are talking about breed, I need more details. Color doesn't really say much about the breed. You would have to tell me some traits or something about the conformation. If you are referring to color, well, it could be one of several things. If it is dark brown with a black mane and tail...it is probably bay. If it is a medium brown with a brown mane and tail it could possibly be chestnut or sorrel. Hope this helps!

If it's the breed you're trying to find out... it could be just about anything as a few people above mentioned. Do you have a photo or anything online of him/her? If you do, maybe some experienced people may be able to take a look at his conformation and tell you what they think. It's much easier to figure out when you have a photo in front of you. :)

This story may not help, but here it is.. a friend of mine adopted a little white dog at a shelter and they bonded immediately. The dog went to the vet for his first exam and at the end, my friend asked what breed(s) he thought the dog might be. The vet carefully studied the dog's paws, ears, tail and face, and then, very seriously, and matter of factly said, "A white dog." Moral of the story, if you don't HAVE to know, love the animal for what they are. Give him/her a kiss on the face for me. Thanks.
