For the money it's hard to beat an epiphone Les Paul, I have a epi Les Paul Goldtop and especially for a starter guitar it is hard to tell the difference between the $500 epi and the $2000 gibson.
Another great starter guitar is a Fender Stratocaster or Telecaster, which you can get your hands on usually for at least a $100 cheaper than a Epi Les Paul.
If you are looking for a rock/high distortion tone look into a guitar with a Humbucker (Les Pauls and some models of Tele/Strat).
Most importantly though--try to go into a guitar store where they will let you play a few different ones (or have a salesman demonstrate them for you) before you take it home. Kinda like trying on a pair of pants! ha!

Gibson is totally different. It is nothing like a real Les Paul the materials quality, and pick ups are not the same but it is the same shape(the epiphone) But it is an excellent starter guitar.

Epiphone is a great guitar, it's really a gibson. Just made overseas and doesn't have the brand name. Quality, material and specs are the same. I believe they're owned by the same company as well.
you have a gibson les paul for half the price. anyone denying it is just upset they spent 1000$ too much.

every kind of guitar is good for startin',but they say it's better to play a popular beginer guitar for the first 'cause it dosen't change your touch.for example GIBSONS give you a touch like les paul or SLASH or B.B.king,but you don't want to be them, you want to be yourself,so they prefer some guitars like SQUIER STRAT' or like that for a beginer.
anyway like every gibson or gibson likes, epiphone is a good expensive cleansound guitar.
but like all the gibsons it causes you limits, you can play like SLASH or B.B.King when you have a gibson or epiphone or something like that, but you can never play a song by BUDDY GUY or SRV or ALBER COLLINS or eric clapton...just like themselves
if you can bare the limits,so go ahead and enjoy the gibson ride with epiphone.

Yes it is a good one. I have been playing for 30 years and I would recommend it for a starter. Just find a good teacher and practice. Some websites you might want to look at www.musicansfriend.com or www.americanmusicsupply.com
