Am I the only one who thinks that music has gone a bit downhill lately?I mean like Britney Spears,J-lo, and Beyonce,to me they cannot sing very well compared to past divas.I mean i am glad for their success, but it seems that even rap music is a bit routine. It is either about bling or money now,but I can remember it having a deeper feel back in the days.I cannot sing but I loved hearing artists work their voice and even grew a love for opera because of it.But does any one feel that music has been in a bit of an artisic rut lately? How much could you be convinced to spend on a Britney Spears ,ect cd?

Pop music has gone back and forth from original and artistic to crappy and cutesy:

Mid 1950s - Birth of rock and roll. It was daring, edgy, and although it was based on the blues it really had a sound that was all it's own. (Chuck Berry, Little Richard)

Late 1950s - All of the major artists disappeared (died, were arrested, became infamous from scandals) and so the "industry" produced "safe" adorable crooners. (Paul Anka).

Mid 1960s - Reaction to this? British Invasion! The 1960s were a great time for pop music - thoughtful folk-rock groups, creative psychedelic groups, etc. (Beatles, Dylan, Cream)

1970s - Reaction to all that thinking? Disco. Fun, catchy, commercial, but not very challenging.

You can continue doing this list going back and forth up to current times. All we can hope is that the general public might get tired of the crap that's out there and spend their money on more artistic and musically-gifted groups. Like the other person said, America is driven by greed. So all of us that feel this way had better "put our money were our mouth is".

Unfortunately Pop music reflects pop culture...and they're in
it for the money so must appeal to the general public. Our
society right now is mainly concerned with looks, money
and fame, so don't hold out for a revolution against these
banal and meaningless values. It's at the bottom of the
barrel right now and can only go up. There's so much
talent out there being wasted on promoting sex and
violence through music, and the sad thing is that people
are doing everything they can to emulate these icons
of bad taste. When they decide to jump off a cliff and
everyone follows we can all start over with a drum and
a stick. Callas forever.

Breath hard, and talk fast.
