If I am trying to find the volume of a shape of rotation around an axis using the disc method and I get a negative result, does this mean I did the method wrong, or should I just take the absolute value?

you probably used the disk method wrong. the area should never be negative, and it would be very wrong to take the absolute value of it. i suggest you recheck your work. maybe you subtracted the two equations wrong

You are probably using incorrect limits of integration. You should integrate separately between each intersection of your two bounding functions.

I'm pretty sure you've made an error. If you could put the actual problem on-line I'm certain someone can help you further.
