There are some similarities. Most noticeably, the villain in each case. In "The Prestige" the main villain is another magician. In "The Illusionist, the main villain is a nobleman who is vying for the same love as the magician. Both movies have competing hotties for my affection. One being Jessica Biel and the other being Scarlett Johansson (sp?). But they did come out too close together for me to think they were truly original. Kinda like the movies "Deep Impact" and "Armageddon." Two movies, too similar, too close in release to tell them apart.

They were both based on previously published material, so you might have to accuse those authors of copy-catting.
They are both about 19th century magicians doing unbelievable tricks - but that is when those magicians flourished, so you can understand why there are similarities.
"The Illusionist" is smaller, quieter, gentler - it's mostly a love story, and involves royal intrigue and spiritualism. It's about a magician in love with a noble woman who conjures ghosts.
"The Prestige" is slicker, flashier, scarier - it's about the intense competition between two magicians who will do anything to top each other.
Even though they have similar settings and occupations, the movies are pretty different. They were both okay - not my favorites for the year, but not something where I'd want my money back either. I'd recommend them both.

It wasn't a copycat movie. This type of thing happens in Hollywood quite often. Two similiar movies are made at the same time.
Armageddon, Deep Impact
Antz, A Bug's Life
Volcano, Dante's Peak
You see.

its a similar story, but the prestige is more about competition, and what people would do for it. while the illusionist is more of a love story.
