k i have a pet rat at home at the moment, and have had quite a few in my life (given I'm only 16).

we feed our rat basically anything. they r like little garbage bins lol

table scraps such as leftover meats, veges, fruits, nuts, etc. Don't feed them onions, but they can have some herbs. my rattie loves parsley. just remember that rats originally were scavengers so they can eat basically anything.

NEVER FEED YOUR RAT ANY DAIRY PRODUCT UNLESS IT IS LACTOSE FREE, EVEN CHEESE! this includes milk, yogurt, chocolate, and cheese. despite the stereotype cheese is not good for rats or mice! my rat loves milk, so we buy lactose free milk (or kitten milk) from the shops for her.

I'm assuming these are your first rats, and believe me they make wonderful pets. just remember to spend plenty of time with them; the more you handle them the better they will be, and feed them plenty of fresh food and seeds. not too much green veges such as lettuce or spinach cos it can give them diarrhoea.

BTW just a quick note that some rats can be prone to cancers and respiratory disease. 3 of mine had to be put to sleep because of cancers, but other than that there are not many diseases they can get.

feed em plenty of fresh food n seeds, change their water regularly (4-5 times a week, more if it is in a dish, not a bottle)
spend plenty of time with them and they wil be great pets.

hope that helped u a little bit

My rat ate pretty much anything I ate. He liked nuts, beans, cereals, peanut butter, applesauce, cheese puffs or a small taste of cheese (on VERY rare occasions--cheese can actually make rats sick if they eat more than a little taste every once in awhile), vegetables, fruits, breads, crackers, boiled noodles, and things like that. You might be able to give your rats some Ramen noodles as long as you don't put the flavoring on them--it's really salty, and I don't think all of that would be good for a rat. Fruits and veggies are the best, though, because some of them are thought to contain things that can help fight cancer.

When I had rats, their main diet was the rat pellets... but I also supplemented with a variety of healthy treats... those biscuits that you feed to birds were a favorite for them. Also, believe it or not, they loved those fish flakes you give to fish. Sometimes I'd give them dog kibble... a table scrap now and then... occasionally - though very rarely - a bit of fruit... they are hardy and can eat a lot of things. I'd usually steer on the healthy side just to try to add years to their already way-too-short life spans.

As far as food goes I'd recomend a good quality lab block like Harlan teklad Product # 8604.
If you use lab blocks make sure the protine level is 18% to 24% and less is too low any more is too high.
As far as treats go please keep them to a minimum. Maybe 3 a week per rat. My ratties love organic macaroni noodles that you can buy from any bulk store. Mine like the green ones best.
Also fresh fruit is great, mine love fresh grapes and banada chips and dried cranberies.
I've included a list of forbidden foods as well. and a great link to a livejournal group that is awsome.

Raman noodles are probably too high in sodium. We used to feed ours Cheerios as treats.
