All 3 cats are neutered and spayed. Though this started when I brought home a pregnant cat in September and then she had 5 kittens mid October. The last kitten left at 10 weeks old and then the mother was spayed.
We didn't catch it until it started to smell a few weeks into it, by that time I think permanent damage to the padding had already been done... and then my dog got the runs all over that same carpet. I'm pretty sure I can get the carpet clean on my own, but it's pulling up the carpet, replacing the padding and putting the carpet back in place that I'm not sure of. I''ve bought gallons of Nature's Miracle, I just don't want to start a process and make a big mess only to find out I did something incorrectly... and the bottles say to keep animals away until dry... which could be over a week...
Thank you for all the advice thus far... any new revelations with these added details??? All this info is GREATLY APPRECIATED!!! Thank You!

Cat Urine is certainly a problem. Those that answered about replacing the carpet and pad are certainly correct if you want to completely get rid of the odor, but until you are ready to get rid of the cat itself that solution would be totally useless. Many of the answers here though do work well. We have two cats and occasionally accidents do happen. Natures miracle does work well and you defintely need to keep some in the house for quick fixes that work relatively well. Baking soda is a natural odor absorber and really does work well in keeping odors down, but does nothing to disinfect the area. But for the real tough jobs dont forget the real miracle of nature and it is one of the cheapiest solutions you can buy. Vinegar! A natural de odorizer and an excellent cleaner! When a dog of ours was out pointing, it mustered up a skunk and every attempt to rid the poor thing of the smell proved futile. Untill ........yep Vinegar it works.

I've been through this, I have two cats and a puppy. A lot of people are giving you some very expensive advice. Before ripping up your floor try Nature's Miracle, it does work. I have never heard of someone using this properly and still having to replace their flooring. Getting a black light is a good idea, this way you can make sure you get everything. you are going to need to saturate the carpet till it's sopping wet so you know you got the pad too. A less expensive alternative to Nature's Miracle that may or may not work as well is just pouring a solution of white vinegar and water and saturating the carpet in the same manner as the Nature's Miracle. Both will take a while to dry, and will probably stink a bit until they do. But it should eliminate the odor for you and your cat. It has always worked for me.

You also need to have your cat checked by the vet, a lot of medical problems cause inappropriate peeing. It could be behavioral, it could also be cause he did it once because his box wasn't clean enough for him and now he smells it in the carpet, so he thinks that's his potty spot. Using Nature's Miracle should solve that last problem. Also make sure your cat has at least two litter boxes, if your house is two stories, you need one on each floor, it should be out of the way of normal traffic, some place quiet and safe. It must always be clean, a lot of cats simply won't go in box that has been soiled. A lot of cats also won't share a box (if you have more than one cat). Also, make sure your cat likes the litter you are using. Stay away from the crystals and clay and pellets, they can be painful on the paws and some cats are very sensitive to this. I like Tidy Cats scoop. Incidently, scoop litters make it easier to clean and keep the litter box more sanitary because when you scoop you're getting out almost all of the urine rather than raking it all around.

OK so they all say replace the padding, Can you not find a piece of padding, and then just remove that portion that needs to be done.Sometimes if you go to a carpet store they will have remnant's. But before putting it down. You must clean the carpet and the floor under the padding you are removing. Wash the carpet with a carpet cleaner, then take 1 cup of white vinegar and 2 cups of warm water and with a sponge dab it on the carpet. Also use it underneath .Then take paper towel and layer it under the carpet to absorb the liquid. vinegar removes odors.

So sorry to tell you, but you really have a problem. First of all, removing the carpeting and pad are vitally necessary. But the problem is much worse than that. The urine is now in the floor under the padding. The padding HAS to be removed. The floor MUST be painted with a stain and odor blocker, and then all new flooring installed. Anything short of these steps will only have to be re-done. I work in a place where we do ths all the time. Stanley Steemer will tell you the same thing. I tried to avoid all this, but the pros' said I'd be throwing my money away. Soooo sorry!

Cat Peed On Carpet

There is a cleaner called "Zep" that they sell at Home Depot that is wonderful about getting the cat urine out of carpet. Not only does it get the stain and smell out, but it will also get out old pet stains. It gets out all kinds of stuff from your carpet and furniture. The padding might need to be replaced but if you get the spots on the carpet cleaned up, your room mates will never know. Most of the time my hubby doesn't know.

Rent an extractor. Also if you can pick up the carpet, and get down to the flooring, clean it good also. If any odor is left, the cat will do it again. Either keep the cat out, or get a large cage to keep it in. I have built a large cage outside of a small window with a flap so that the cat can go in and out when he wants to, this way he doesn't run wild, but yet gets to sit out when he wants. Also it keeps him from getting into fights with other cats, or scratching up someones car.

Ok, take a DEEP breath!

Now sprinkle the ENTIRE area with plain baking soda--let sit for at least a 1/2 hour.

You are going to have to rent an steam cleaner (usually about $30 for the day). Or borow one from your LL, and it may be worth asking as LL's sometimes do have one on hand.

Steam clean the entire area where the baking soda is, open the windows.

Then purchase this product called "Pet Neutrilizer" by Arm & Hammer & sprinkle all over the area again. Let that sit for an hour.

Then vaccum over it as normal.

That should do it.

This happened to me. There is no fixing it except to replace the padding. Sorry.

But, you should know that any cat thats urine smells is "spraying" as it pees. This isn't normal unless a cat is marking it's territory, which they're not likely to do indoors. You should get rid of the cat.

First off, don't ask Home Depot for advice on cat urine. They probably don't know what they're talking about.

Go to a pet store and ask people there. It's their job to know this sort of thing. They can probably recommend something that will help you to remove the cat smell.

My local pet store has a lot of Nature's Miracle odor remover for sale, so I'm guessing that it must work. I've never tried it so I don't know if it works or not, but you can ask.
