I totally agree with shortstuff. Use needle sizes 8-10, and practice with some really cheap acrylic yarn.

www.lionbrand.com is a good site for how-to's, but I also like the one listed above with the videos. It's very helpful.

Do you live in a metro area? Maybe you could take some lessons. Local yarn stores always have lessons---plus you can often bring your project in and ask questions. Michaels and large craft stores like that often have lessons too. That might be a good way to make some friends that you can go to as you start working on more challenging projects.

And the biggest piece of advice I could give you----please practice knitting, purling, casting on, binding off, etc before you start a project.

Good luck!

Wow, that's a pretty tough question to answer without being able to show you. There are a lot of good sites out there. Knittingwisdom.com is a good one. Also, there are some real good vhs and dvd's out now. I've checked some out from the library. Some are kind of old, but are still good to watch to get the information you need.

http://knittinghelp.com has videos on how to begin and basic to complicated stitches and techniques.

I would suggest beginning with US size 8 or 10 needles (5-6 mm) and light colored worsted weight yarn-- not wool to begin wiht because it can be difficult to work with and hard to take apart. Start with cheap acrylic yarn because you can take it apart easily and it is usually tightly wrapped.
