Yes, the families are real, but most parts are scripted. There are directors, and they will reshoot scenes many times until they get exactly what they want. Another type of staging they often do is to "create" a situation, such as a fake birthday party or event, and pretend it's real. When a family is screened and chosen, they sign an agreement where they are willing to do just about whatever the producers want, and the families are compensated pretty well.

If it was scripted they would have to be the most amazing actors the world has ever seen! LMAO What makes it seem so nuts is the way they deliberately pair up 2 couples that are opposites in every way so the sparks will fly!
