it's hard to explain, but if the pet didn't know what happened would it be harder for them to cope with your death because they wouldn't have closure, they would just want to see you but wouldn';t be able to find you. I feel worse for a dog sometimes when i hear of someone dying and leaving behind a pet, because they never really know what happened to u.

i am not sure that they can tell that you died unles maybe if they were with you when you were dead. by scent. but i do know that dogs will grieve when there owners leave or die my dashound would not live long if anything happened to me i know this for sure if i leave over night he freaks out pacing and wont eat and one time i left for a week and this is no lie his face hair turned grey. there are countles stories of dogs and there owners such as the dog who waited on the train everyday til he died and they made a statue of him i have heard of dogs sitting by graves or a chair ect... they are truely amazing animals and very smart so yea i would guess they know when your dead

pets don't have a soul but they do have instincts. i believe they do know when something is not right. i have seen it more times than not when an animal is close to someone that when that person passes away they know something has happened. they do feel sadness.
