IMHO the best value hotel in Las Vegas is the Orleans. This is their site.
http://www.orleanscasino.com >they have a free shuttle that runs to the center of the strip about every 20 minutes.
If you don't need a pool, the Barbary Coast is a nice hotel and it has a great location. You can access the BC web site through the Orleans web site.
the Stratosphere sits at the far north end of the strip and it's location makes it unpopular, which makes it great for us bargain hunters. The Stratosphere is NOT, old, rundown, dump and or cheap I hear that all the time. The Stratosphere is a very nice three star hotel that opened in April of 1996 it's not the old "Vegas World" hotel that was on the same spot.

The above will price match any online room rate you find for their hotel.

If your idea of not too expensive is $100 per night- and you do some research and follow the advice below. You can find four star hotels at that rate, or less. The Luxor has some $69 room rates around the first of April >promotion code> "PDGET17"
The Flamingo sometimes has rates under $100 , has a very good location and great pool area.

If you're going to rent a car and don't mind staying at an off strip hotel. Sam's Town, Boulder Station, Fiesta Henderson and Silverton are all nice places to stay and play.
*advice below*-The best way to save money on a hotel in Las Vegas is to avoid special events, large conventions and weekends.

I loved the Monte Carlo, it's centrally located on the strip and very clean and neat. The employees are very friendly. The dealers and cocktail waitresses are the best in vegas. The pool is nice and they have a good selection of food. I've stayed in cheaper and in more expensive places, Monte Carlo is still my fav.
