I want to get my cartilage pierced (on my upper ear). I plan on going to a clean, well respected studio, where they'll pierce it with a needle (not the gun!!!). But I've been reading horror stories about cauliflower ear and cartilage piercings gone bad. I really want to get it pierced, but I'm not sure about the risk. What are the chances that I'll get an infection?

Thanks.

My friend gets infections all the time, she has her cartilage pierced. I hear that it is not good for you.

I hope you are not my granddaughter Audrey. I think she has more self respect than to get holes punched into the top of her ear. As for infections, even if you go to a reputable studio there is a chance of infection during the healing period at home.
I have had pierced ears for 60 years and have a tatoo where only my husband can see it (it was for him anyway) but I find the type of piercing you are talking about kind of sad. It is not decorative but reather self mutilation. Don't you like yourself? You have to love your own body before a man will love it. Or another woman. I am facinated by the number of lesbians who do the cartilage piecing. Is it a sexual thing? Like penetration of the hyman? Anyway, keep it clean and you probably won't get an infection on your ear. Ugh!

I had 4 peircings going down my ear for 15 yrs. I never had major infections or anything like that. But, the top one was always hurting, I'd put alcohol on it, to treat like an infection, it would clear up, then a couple weeks later, start bugging me again. It just got to the point that I took it out. I never had a problem at all with the other 3. I think the top one just kept moving a little like when I'd sleep.

Ouch ... top of your ear ... bet that will hurt. I thought only the New Zealand Rugby Teams had "cauliflour ears" from too much damage. If you get it done, then it is up to you to make sure that there is no infection. You have to look after them after you get it done. It's really your responsibility. Take care.

A lot of my friends and my cousins have their cartilage pierced and they are perfectly fine so don't worry. It'l only get infected and stuff if you keep touching it, etc. . . . . . . . .
