I want to learn (maybe teach myself) how to sew. I've looked at some sewing patterns but I don't really understand them. What are some sewing pattern basics that I should know?

Beginners should always start with Simplicity, that's why they call those patterns by that name. Buy a solid color material to start, that way there is no worry about matching the pattern in the material, such as plaids. Plaids and other obvious prints can be a pain even for the more advanced seamstress, so avoid that headache at first. Good luck and have fun.

You want to start with easy or beginner patterns. McCall's, Butterick and Simplicity all make easy patterns but you might first try the Simplicity "for dummies" patterns. They are written in the style of the books so explain a lot. (There is a "Sewing for Dummies" book that explains a lot, too.) Read the instructions. They explain a lot of the terms and markings on the pattern.

Without a more specific project that's the basics.
