The size of the largest country is 64 times the size of the smallest country plus five square miles. How large is the smallest country in the state of new york? explain what you do

64x+5=1769 to 63x=1764
wouldnt it be 64x=1764?

L = 64S + 5

64S + 5 = 1769 + S

63S = 1764

S = 28

L = 64(28) + 5

y=sze of the smallest country

formulate equation:
equation 1:
x= 1769 +y
(because accdg. to the question the largest country(y) is 1769 miles bigger than the smallest country(x), therefore if u add 1769 to y it will give u x)
equation 2:
x=64y+5
(because accdg. to the question the largest country is 64 times the size of the smallest country (y) plus 5, therefore if u multiply y with 64 nand then add 5 to that ull get x.

so u have two equations:
x=1769 + y and x=64y+5
since x is both equal to 1769 + y and 64y +5, you can now equate those two equations which gives you 1769 +y = 64y +5.
isolate y, you'll have 63y= 1764 ( i got this from 1769-5=64y-y). so y=28 ( i got this from 1764/63).

Answer: 28 miles is the size of the smallest country in the state of new york
