When I shut down, I get a pop up window that says that rundll32 is not responding with the option to cancel or end now. When I hit end now, the computer shuts down fine, but its annoying that my computer can't just shut down by itself. Any suggestions? I'm running XP.

does it happen in safe mode? if it doesn't then u know one of the program running in the background is giving you trouble. try disable them one by one and see which one is causing it.

Hi -

Let's try this.

Go to Start - Then Run - Then type in MSCONFIG

Once in MSConfig, go to Startup tab. Once at the startup tab, click the button on the bottom right or left that unselects everything. It's up to you if you would like certain programs to start up at boot.

If this doesn't work, go back into MSCONFIG, and then go to services. Once at services, check the box titled Hide All Microsoft Services. Then, unselect the programs that you choose. You want your firewall runing 24/7 so make sure that is up!

Hope this helps, and good luck!

Click Start - Click Run - Then type in MSCONFIG

Once in MSCONFIG, click on the last tab that is “Startup”.
Once at the startup tab, click the button on the bottom right that says, “Disable All”.
It's up to you if you would like certain programs to start up at boot.
But keep the check in your antivirus check box.
Then click on Services tab.
Check the box at the bottom, titled Hide All Microsoft Services.
Then, unselect the programs that say ‘Stopped’.
Click on ‘Apply’ and then ‘Close’.
The computer will restart on its own. Let it.
Once it restarts, it will show a message of System Configuration Utility.
Check on the box that says, “don’t show this message again” and click okay.
Now try shutting down your computer.
Wen you restart the computer, you may see two options of Microsoft Windows Explorer.
Don’t choose either.
Once at the desktop, right click on My Computer icon and select properties.
Then click on the last tab that says “Advanced”.
There you will find Startup and recovery tab. Click on it.
Uncheck the box beside- Display List of Operating Systems for…
Click Apply and Okay.

If this does not help, go to google.com and type in rundll32.exe; you will find link there to download and erase the faulty library.

It happenes all the time to me.

I'm sorry, but there is no way out of it.

Windows XP just was made badly for shutting down.

It doesn't hurt anything to click end now, but if you wait, it may end on its own.

Tell me if I'm wrong please.

Thanks for your time!

Try doing a full scan for spyware and viruses. Sometimes that behavior can be caused by a rogue program that is running.
