It means there is something that cant be discussed.

Imagine there is an elephant in the room but nobody talks about it. Everyone pretends there is no elephant and continues their lives. You can twist this expression by adding variations to it. Such as when a tv character said

Noone will be talking about the pink elephant in the room.

(in reference to the idea of going to a wedding between an effeminate man and a woman. )

The expression is a 'pink elephant in the room'. It's a situation which is obvious to everyone but noone discusses.

ie - at a dinner party a woman attends who has a big black eye (which everyone knows is from her abusive husband). Because it's a sensitive situation, noone asks, and everyone feels uncomfortable about it.

There is a very important topic or situation that no one in the house wants to address, for whatever reason. So it just sits there, staying a situation, because no one tries to solve it.

usually when an issue that is looming and important is being overlooked in favor of other less pressing issues either through deliberate ignorance,or because no one wants to mention the obvious.
