You can't beat the caribbean - but here's a really good tip. Try the French caribbean - Martinique, Guadeloupe etc. It has all the advantages of being part of a European country (France) along with the fantastic climate. Crime is relatively low, it's not so commercialised, especially if you rent a gite (MUCH cheaper than a hotel, and gets you into the local community). The contrast between some of the neighbouring islands like St Lucia is dramatic, I always feel safe in Martinique, got hassled badly in St Lucia. There are regular and direct flights from France which are cheaper, all you need is to get a cheap flight from the UK to Paris, and there's loads of those. It's fantastic to leave Europe in the freezing cold, then dip your toes in the caribbean sea the same day, sipping a "Ti Punch". As they say in creole "C'est nous meme!" (Cheers!).

The sun IS brighter in the winter because the Earth's orbit around the sun is not a perfect circle but an elipse with the sun at one focus. The Earth is closest to the sun on ~January 5th, so the sun will be brightest on and around that day. However, this has nothing to do with the march of the seasons, which are due to the angle of the sun above the horizon. Due to the tilt of the Earth's axis compared to the orbital plane, The sun is nearly overhead at noon in late spring and summer, but it is very low in the sky even at noon in the winter. If you don't believe me just check out the length of your shadow at ~1:00PM Daylight saving time now, and then do the same at 12:00 noon in late November or December-January and you will see what I mean. The lower sun angle means colder temperatures, regardless of where the sun is in its orbit.

One of my favourite holiday destination is Tioman Island, Malaysia. It is reputedly one of the ten most beautiful islands in the world. Scenic and tranquil, white sandy beaches, swaying palm trees, charming villages and friendly people. Its crystal clear waters teem with spectacular marine life and colourful coral gardens. If u can't afford to a place like Mauritius, try Tioman Island or Malaysia as your holiday destination.

The Caribbean is a great place to go to in winter, you can get some really good deals too, the Canneries would be a good bet as its warm all year round.

the Canaries, always reliably warm, or Egypt, hot even at this time of year. Just to see blue skies and warm colours instead of all this grey would cheer us all up.

For me it's Australia. In our winter it's their summer. They have fantastic beaches and wildlife.

Thailand is also beautiful and fairly cheap. You need to shop around for offers.

I would agree with The Caribbean. When I was there late last year we met a couple that was from London.
