Let me say that I was incredibly confused watching Tommy when it came on TV the other night. Great soundtrack, cute guy, but very strange.

Are there any The Who fans out there that would like to explain this movie to me? Is it supposed to be a big metaphor or something, or is it based on one of the member's lives?

Some of the elements (the abuse) is loosely based on Pete Townsends own experiences.

Tommy is the story of a young boy who's father supposedly died in the war. His mother remarries and when his biological father shows up, Tommy's stepfather killed him by accident. Tommy (age 4) witnessed the death and is told that he didn't see it or hear it and he must never talk about it. This drives Tommy to become deaf, dumb and blind.

Frustrated Tommy's mother and stepfather try everything. In the mean time, he is being abused by his cousin Kevin and sexually abused by Uncle Ernie. Eventally, his parents try LSD to break Tommy out of his shell and he is healed. Sadly, it a moderate success and Tommy remains pretty unresponsive. He finds his cure through pinball.

The miracle healing leads to stardom and a cult following. Naturally, all things must fail and the following stumbles as Tommy realizes what he has created.
