its a protocol "an identification or an address from which it is recognised or communicated by other computers by networking or internet"

2007-02-19 15:33:54 · answer #1 · answered by xxsanxx 5 · 0 0

internet protocol. Think of it as your street address. every computer that is on the internet has one, and that is how hackers can find people as well as authorities track people down to their house. It is possible to get it changed but that's mainly for techies though. The average person doesn't because they don't feel the need to, but if you're into computers they do, but you gotta pay to get different ip addresses that change. if you go into the run menu and go under the command prompt, you can "ping" your ip address and what that does it's like a ping pong effect. you can test to see if the info is going back and forth from your pc to the internet/server. You can refer to internet for dummies to explain it better than I did if you're still confused. If you notice when you go to a site or if you first open up your internet explorer, you can see on the very bottom in the gray bar that it will have a series of numbers and that is the ip address and they start with 192. blah blah...

There are two version of IP(the Internet Protocol):IP version 4 and 6. An ip version 4 address looks like 192.168.2.1 while a version 6 address looks like 2001:0db8:3c4d:0015:0000:0000:abcd:ef12.

IP is the way in which your computer can communicate with other servers on the internet. It is how the internet knows where you want to send and receive your data to and from. It uses the ip address to determine which computer it should send data to and receive data from.

I hope this answered your question.

IP address stands for Internet protocol address. Every computer\server\website has an ip address. It allows the information packets to be routed to the correct computer almost like our mail system and real addresses

IP address is an address to a computer or a network. The IP adress is used to locate/identify a computer.

They are like phone numbers.
In order for one computer to connect to the Internet, the computer must have a unique IP adress to be identifiable to the network.

(However, there is a technology called "IP masquerading" which does not require one's internally networked computers to have a unique IP when connecting to the Internet. This technology is used to share the same IP with other internally networked computers by adding their uniquely identifiable ID to the IP packet).

If you dial in to an Internet Service Provider (ISP) to connect to the Internet, they will temporarily assign one of their pooled IP addresses to your computer for the duration of the connection. So your IP address is likely to be different each time you dial up to your ISP.

Since when you sign up for your ISP, you give them some of your personal information (like your address, name, phone number), your ISP can track you down whenever they want to (they maintain a log record).

Other ordinary users cannot get your personal information by just looking at the IP address which was given to your computer while you are connected. However, your ISP may be forced to release your contact information to the authority if you violate the law on the Internet.

So you are not completely anynomous unless you can fake your IP address or hijack somebody's IP (or even crack into someone's server).

IP stands for Internet Protocol.

It is basically just an address for your computer. It allows outside computers to find you on the internet.

To find your own, you can go to Start -> Run -> type "CMD"

When the command prompt comes up, type "ipconfig" and it will tell you. If it is hooked up to a router, then the router will assign you a generic IP address and the router will have it's own "External" IP address.

Internet Protocol (IP) is a data-oriented protocol used for communicating data across a packet-switched internetwork.

IP is a network layer protocol in the internet protocol suite and is encapsulated in a data link layer protocol. As a lower layer protocol, IP provides the service of communicable unique global addressing computers.
