Our local cable company has started charging for NOT providing certain services. For instance, they are charging customers for NOT renting their cable modems ($3 a month). And they are charging internet customers for NOT using their digital phone services ($5 a month).

There has to be something illegal about this. How can they charge for services they aren't providing? There is no work involved for them.

And if this isn't illegal, can I start charging people for not buying things I sell?

And if this isn't illegal, shouldn't it be?

Any idea who I can complain to?

They did inform people. Sadly, there has been no public uproar. Not that I've seen anyway.

And trust me, we're dropping them next month.

Actually, batwanda, the local news are the ones who first reported it like it was no big deal.

I'll not mow your lawn for thirty bucks an hour.

It is illegal if they did not inform you that they would do this before you started doing business with them. I would advise you, if possible, to stop doing business with them as soon as possible. Complain a lot too and try to get your money back.

It's certainly unethical, in my opinion. If I were you, I would lodge a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, at the very least. If you warn the cable company prior to doing this, however, they may decide to drop the extra charges. Good luck!

It is illegal if you were not informed (via contract) before you sign-up with the company's services.

If it is not stated in the contract you can complain or file charges and get your money back and stop their services.

I don't think that this is right of your cable company. If you know where the main office is I am sure that they have a customer service department try there.

Call the local tv station, they would probably love to do a story with you on this.
Good Luck
