I recently bought a set but I don't know how to get the picture to look right. Everytime I use them it looks like I'm drawing with crayons. Can anyone help?

The best way to use oil pastels is to layer them like oil paints. You can use a brush (or Q-tip or rag) with some turpentine, mineral spirits, linseed oil or mineral oil to blend the pastels like paint as well.

Try also drawing on smooth paper or board to reduce that "drawn with a crayon" look. It takes some practice, so don't be dismayed at first - experiment!

joyful paint hit it all pretty much exact.

there are also brands of water soluble oil pastels. that way you don't have to deal with the mineral spirits/turpentine.

they have to be smudged after you've drawn with them.
since they are oil based..they will blend easier than crayolas...
try using your fingers, q-tips or anything you can think of to get a softer effect. i imagine you are referring to the craypaas brand?
