I already did - 27 years worth. I talked long and hard to keep my kids out of the military. I fugured out while I was in that I was the guy who got sent to beat up the other country that the politicians were mad at. It had nothing to do with defending my country. Now if there was an actual. threat to this country I would give my full blessing to my kids serving. ThIs is the first generation that will not served and my family can trace a couple of hundred yers back. My father who served 10 years is a WII and Korean vet and my two brothers who are Viet Nam vets joined in the conversation with my children. I would gladly serve and give up my life again if I felt that I was defending America but this isn't a threat and it isn't the time. DO NOT question my honor sir and I won't question yours.

if I had to. but as a female I don't see what is any help I coudl be- women aren't allowed to fight.

since I'm non-violent unless there was an invasion I'd problly just help out at home. during the world wars people started farming and filling up job positions that were abandoned because people joined the serivce.
so I'm sure there is something I can do to help without being violent.

I served 6 years in the US Army, 2 of them staring down Russians on the Wall in West Berlin. Had they invaded us I would've fought to my last breath to defend America. I tried to re-enlist after 9-11 but I'm too old to go back.

Of course I would -- if it were possible. I'm too young right now to be of any service, but I gladly would.

With one stipulation: I would only fight to defend the country if it was worth defending. If the country's core had rotted away and there was nothing truly left that means America, of which we are even now on the path, I don't think I could bring myself to do it. I would be insulting the Founders and the ideas for which they stood, as well as the hope that such ideas could ever again be brought into existence.

After 9/11, I was willing to give-up my cushy, mid-six-figure income and enlist. The recruitment officer told me that I wasn't eligible because of my age.

He!! Yes I would fight for America! Even in Iraq, even though I have some reservations about the articulated pretexts for being there, I think it has served as a suitable diversionary tactic for the militant Muslims.

I have-in Grenada and Panama. And if I were in good enough health,I would gladly serve in Afghanistan. But this insanity in Iraq just saddens me.My uncles who served in "Nam just watch all this unfold and shake their heads. To a man, they can't believe we're doing it all over again.

Yes, I would! I enlisted nearly eight years ago. There were times I didn't agree with orders given from the politicians, but I followed them anyway. It isn't about the politics, its about standing up for the men and women next to you, even if they have different political beliefs then you. So yes, even if I don't agree with the policy, I would still proudly fight to make sure my friends go home in one piece, and keep my mouth shut about my political beliefs in the process.

Sure, if America were actually attacked and they were desperate enough to take an old coot like me. I had the opportunity to serve in Vietnam but I passed on that wonderful opportunity because I didn't wish to take part in the deliberate slaughter of unarmed civilians such as Senator Bob Kerrey received a decoration for doing and Lieutenant Calley had the misfortune to have to serve a few months time for doing.

So would you consider it a high honor to do what Kerrey did? How about the folks at Abu Ghraib? Were they performing honorably?

I do think it is the highest honor if you serve honorably.

I already have. When I served, I always kept in mind my oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic, and upheld that for good or bad.
