Perhaps I should ask if there is a signifigance to that? Why does it have a gay connotation?

Oh people please don't be so foolish!!! While Mardi Gras may have some HINT of Catholisism in it, it is NOT a religious holiday!!! ESPECIALLY not in New Orleans, the VOODOO capital of the U.S.!!! Mardi Gras is an invitation it put a mask on and sin in every way imaginable, and be "excused" for it. I am not ignorant nor do I appreciate being spoken to like I am!!!

I don't know about Australia but there's no gay connotation for the Mardi Gras celebration in New Orleans.

i can not communicate for gays and lesbians, yet i'm from the hot Orleans section and can say indisputably that hedonism is the whole component of Mardi Gras. that is why that is referred to as a carnival. The observe derives from the Latin "carne", meaning "flesh". traditionally, Mardi Gras is a occasion of flesh and a final probability to bask in particularly lots each little thing in the past the abstinance and fasting of Lent.

Maybe you should do a little reading about religion and history before you ask such a question. Mardi Gras is theday before the beginning of Lent. I know this and I'm Jewish.

Actually, its just incidental to the overall party.

WE HAVE OUR OWN Mardi Gras, called "Southern Decadence."

A lot of gay people are involved with it (the celebrating and parties at least), but no, I doubt there's any gay connotation.

It's fat Tuesday, a religious deal related to lent, but not gay although gays of course go like they go to other events. They are part of the community after all.

I'm sure you could probably almost take any event and give it a gay connotation somehow?

No. But I saw a commercial for "Guys Gone Wild", and that looked a bit gay to me.
