It can't. I mean, how can anyone pervert self-esteem into a QUANTIFIABLE variable? And why would they want to? How does it help you to work with a client (or on yourself)???? Mad, IMO.

It really doesn't measure one's self-esteem per se. It is a tool that is more for a psychologist to determine where someone is with their self-esteem. It is to be used in conjunction with a complete analysis.
