I think even before the printing press it would be the creation of an lettering or alphabet in each society. And next to that would be the ability to create writing instruments and documents to write on so that others in the future would know what occurred.

The invention of the movable type press by Gutenberg. Movable type made books available to people for the first time on a large scale (and affordable).
The spread of books lead to the spread of ideas, i.e. the Protestant Revolution was spread by papers printed with the idea of questioning the Catholic Church.

You could make a good argument for a lot of things, but the book (I think) was pretty spectacular.

Barring inventions, which of course influence everyday lives of most folks on Earth, I'd say the American Revolution. It helped establish human rights, stable representative government and was the genesis of the creation of the most powerful country presently in the world, for good or bad.

The conversion of Constantine and subsequent unification of the Roman Empire under Christianity.

The Judeo-Christian religious tradition has had a profound impact on the development of western culture. If Constantine had not converted, Christianity (despite the sociological forces it otherwise had going for it) would have faded into obscurity. And that would have changed EVERYTHING

well i think Christ dying on the cross. it's influenced jews lives in that they've been persecuted for not accepting him. they have been murdered and slaughtered for not believing that he resurrected. and i think that's ironic because His dying on the cross, signifies salvation. Him dying for our sins. and He was about love, but alot of Christians kill in Christ's name. then there are the muclims who believe Christ's claim to be the true Messiah, and that He could die for our sins is blaspheme to Muhammad. so whether influenced in a bad or good way i think Christ dying on the Cross is a major influential historical event. i am a christian, and i denounce, killing people because they do not believe Christ died on the cross for our sins. so i am influenced aswell. and i'm sure you are too.
