Some of what’s been said before is a little untrue…
For example – Jordan didn’t make every team he played with ‘better’, tho’ certainly that was the rule for him. Early in his career he didn’t, and he definitely didn’t when he went to the Wizards. Verily, he set that team back years.
Many people declare him ‘best ever’ – but even that’s arguable. He didn’t have the impact on the game itself that Wilt Chamberlain did, and many experts prefer Magic’s team-oriented-game to Jordan’s individual brilliance.
As far as ‘why’… he did come at a stage where basketball needed him, and he was marketed better than any athlete in sports. Media had a big part to play in his ‘best ever’ status – basketball wasn’t the sport it is today when Wilt played.

AikidoBoy is right on the money. I'll elaborate further:
2 time slam dunk champion
9x all-defensive team
1984 Naismith and Wooden Collage Basketball player of the year
Won the 2000 ESPY award for athlete of the century
Countless game winning shots including 1 Collage championship and 2 NBA Finals games.
Jordan is simply the greatest player that has ever played. Period.
