The haight has more vintage (esp. used) stores than noe valley or the fillmore. If you need a few grouped together I'd recommend it. Hayes Valley is more like a place for boutiques. I've never thought of the marina as a place to buy any clothes. Noe Valley isusually a place I go to eat, but I know there are good shops up there as well. I haven't been to the fillmore in awhile, but the kind of place it is, there have to be some interesting clothing shops. You might also find some here and there in Pacific Heights (up polk st.), on Union St., and maybe in SOMA although it's more known for S&M/Bondage clothing shops.

If you like Shopping, San Francisco Centre and Union Square is a must For checking out the diversity of SF, walk these neighborhoods: You could spend almost a full day in each of these The Castro District Marina District Mission District (only in the day time) Take the Golden Gate Transit to muir Woods and hike around for the day. Go to 511 to get info about how to get a weeklong bus pass. or to get bus routes necessary. Restaurants: Lunches- Farmers Market (at the Ferry Building), Mission (La Cumbre, El Toro, or La Tacqueria), Swan Oyster Depot, Mitchell's Ice Cream. You can also get decent food in the basement of San Francisco Centre. Possible Dinners: Slanted Door, Zuni, Foreign Cinema, Boulevard, Chow, or for a special but very pricey treat, Gary Danko!

I would avoid the Haight Ashbury area, dirty, drug infested, and full of wanna be street kids in from the burbs trying way too hard to be cool
If you want to shop check out the Mission. Valencia and Mission between 16th and 21st has lots of cool shops and boutiques and great food and drink.
Hayes Valley, Noe Valley, and Upper Fillmore are also great places to shop and just hang out. The Marina doesn't have much in the way of vintage/thrift shopping.
I just found a new Vintage Store just of Union Square called Vintage on the Square it is located on Sutter between grant and Kearnery
Vintag shopping is something I like to do and my favorite places to do so are the Upper Fillmore [Fillmore between Post and Jackson] in addition to a huge Goodwill store there are several smaller ones Repeat Performance 2436 Fillmore, Crossroads Trading Company at 1901 Fillmore, Junior League Next To New Shop at 2226 Fillmore, Seconds to Go 2252 Fillmore, Victorian House Thrift Store 2033 Fillmore.
The Mission is my other favorite thrift shopping area. Thrift Town at 17th and Mission is the biggest, My personal Favorites are the Community Thrift at 17th and Valencia [one block west of Mission] and Clothes Contact at 16th and Valencia. Other Thrift/Vintage Stores in the area are Something Very Special at 2417 Mission, Mission Thrift at 2330 Mission, Idol Vintage 3162 16th between Valencia and Guerrero, and Captain Jacks at 866 Valencia.
Enjoy!

Castro District (Start south of Market St)
Clement St. (Start at Arguello and west to about 1th Ave) -- this is not trendy, just homey mostly except for the few high-end stores closer to Arguello..
