The style of wearing ties dates back to The Hundred Years War between England and France. England captured a French stronghold (go figure) and as punishment, all the surviving French soldiers had to wear a noose around their necks. Every 7th or 10th or some number was then hung. When word got around about this, the French started wearing scarves around their necks as a symbolic reminder. Eventually it became fashionable and the modern neck tie was made.

originally, it was a modesty thing. the precursor to the tie, the cravat, was originally worn to cover the buttons of the shirt. the thinking was that seeing buttons led to thinking of buttons, which led to thinking of unbottoning, which would lead to actual unbuttoning and other carnal activities like fornication. it makes perfect sense, you see, to cover up the buttons and prevent all that potential trouble.
