They reduce the incentives of both the preferred and non-preferred to perform at their best — the former because doing so is unnecessary and the latter because it can prove futile — thereby resulting in net losses for society as a whole. What about the notion that affirmative action has helped blacks rise out of poverty? The black poverty rate was cut in half before affirmative action — and has barely changed since then.

I disagree with you asking for 5 reasons. I'll give you one.
We now have 2nd and 3rd generation professionals that are benefitting from affirmative action. The sons and daughters of the wealthy and highly educated can, and do, use affirmative action to gain advange. It's time to allow the content of one's character and not the color of one's skin determine everyone's position in this supposed Meritocracy.

I support affirmative action, because black people were denied access to schooling, good jobs, and even personal safety BY LAW. It was not prejudice alone that hurt the descendants of America's slaves. It was that the laws of the land enforced second class citizenship on them. Therefore, redress is necessary.
40 acres and a mule is a promise broken. The schools that exist to serve America's black children are still, by and large, a promise broken. Despite building this country with their blood and bone for no pay, despite today paying taxes and very high prices for basic commodities, the schools are still designed to not prepare their children well for life. Therefore, if a kid wants to go to college and can't make the test scores that kids who went to awesome schools can, let's look at his past experiences in life and see if he merits further consideration of his application based on those past experiences.
At this point, I feel class would be a better qualifying issue for Affirmative Action than race.
No one feels they succeed because of affirmative action - that's a stupid lie. They only feel they got a chance because of affirmative action - they still have to prove themselves.
