My room is always so messy. It gets to the point to where there's a little pathway going from my door to my bed. My problem is that everytime I clean my room, it gets messy the next day. I hate cleaning it too often because I know where everything is when it's messy. But, there is the occasional time where I can't find anything. My room is pretty small and I know I have too much stuff. I was going to start to throw stuff that I don't need away, but I'm a pack rat. How do can I keep my room clean and organised? What are some good tips to throw away things that you don't need? Any other tips you have on this topic I'd gladly take also.

Please and thank you.

I usually get rid of things when I haven't used them for a long time and know I won't be using them. Also, I get rid of things when I see them and say, "Hey, I forgot about this, so I probably won't miss it." Do this first because you'll then have less to work with then you toss this stuff.

Next, group your items logically. Magazines in one place, school/office supplies in another, etc. When you do that, decide if you need containers to display or hold these things like a magazine crate, or a desk organizer, or a shoe rack. If you already have crates or boxes, you can use those until you're ready to spend your money.

Here's some tips to maintain neatness - make a habit to place your dirty laundry in hampers or in the utility room ASAP. Don't let them pile up. Also, make a habit of hanging your coats and jacket as soon as you take them off. And put up your clean laundry as soon as possible. They say it takes 21 days to create new habits. It works!

Also, keep a bin or box someplace for any miscellaneous items or papers you can't immediately put up or deal with. Pick a time during the day to go through it and clear it out.

Good luck!

Have you ever watched any of the home organization shows on TV? Usually they entail a family trying to clean out a hopelessly filled garage. What the hosts of the show usually do is have them empty everything out of the room. As they are emptying the room, they take the items and place them into areas designated for specific categories... ie- sports gear, gardening tools, etc. Once the items are removed and grouped, the family then is able to see that they have 7 pairs of skis, 3 lawn mowers, etc. The overriding theme of these organization shows is "group like things together and pitch the duplicates or unneeded items." Since the task of emptying your room out is probably too daunting, or maybe even logistically impossible, start small. But you can do it on a smaller scale... put all the loose papers in a big paper pile; put all the clothing in a big ol clothing pile, put books in a book pile. Once you have your big piles, then go through each pile and decide which items in the pile you like and which you could live without. If you really need to downsize, pitch all the "nope" and "maybe" items. Take a look at the piles when you are done... bet they're smaller! Once you have achieved "less" of all your piles, then keep them in your room, storing them together... again... like things together! Although this advice isn't the magic pill to the ever-clean room, it will hopefully get you off to a good start. Best of luck!

Here's a suggestion for clothing...
Put a lot of your clothes on hangers & hang them up backwards in your closet. When you take something out to wear it turn the hanger around. Whatever is still backwards in 6 months is probably never going to be worn so get rid of it. (I'd keep the special occasion stuff though).
I'm such a pack rat too but it's not just my room it's all over the house...clutter everywhere!

Hey i know how you feel...my room used to be the same way. I finally got to the point of making a "home" for everything. Then i got to the habbit of putting everything back in its place when i was done with it. If i havent worn it in four to six months...bye see ya...i generally donate my clothes to the local salvation army, or womens shelter. I also do the same with my childrens clothes or toys only i donate them to the clothing bank at the Head Start Preschool.
Develop a home for everything
Put back everything when done
Donate items you havent used in awhile.
Dont be afraid to offer some of your extras to friends who may be struggling.

Good luck.

Go get your room really clean and dejunked. Every morning when you wake up, make your bed and every night, set your timer for 15 minutes and pick up for 15 minutes. When you wake up, you'll be happy because it will be so clean. You'll look forward to cleaning it after awhile. Good Luck! =0)

Every item in your room should have a "home". Try to train yourself to put it in its home as soon as you are done with it. Get rid of stuff you don't use or doesn't have significant sentimental value. Think of it as just another leash holding you back and causing you a low level stress just existing.

I suggest that you get rid of things that you don't need anymore by giving to Salvation Army in your area or try to sale on craigslist or ebay and get smart storage ideas.
