If you knew that an asteroid was going to impact Earth would you as a loving parent/spouse take the lives of your children/spouse to spare them the awful ultimate devastation and painful death? Or, would let them experience the end of the Earth and all life?

What if the thing swerves at the last minute and misses?

An impact would probably be very fast, but even slow would have an element of hope in it and it isn't within my ability to judge whether they should cut their lives short or not.

you have a solid factor "IF" an incoming asteroid ought to truly be thoroughly blown-up. yet i do no longer think of you relatively understand the lots and speeds that we are dealing with. So start up questioning that what's coming at us is properly vast and easily quickly and examine here: a million) we've not got an explosive gadget able to thoroughly blowing or obliterating an merchandise the size of a small mountain. The technologies would not exist. Even the 50 mT hydrogen bomb detonated via the Russians in 1961 would not be able to do the pastime. With our modern technologies this is it sorta like attempting to destroy an on-coming bullet prepare with a uncomplicated kinfolk hammer. 2) evaluate for a 2nd the that the technologies did exist to explode a a million kilometer mass into 30 smaller the two sized hundreds type of say 30 - 33 meters slightly. each and every bit might make it to earth with here capability output. Given the mass of a 30-meter huge rock to be approximately 3000 kg in line with cubic meter, we would desire to calculate the quantity of the rock and multiply cases this density. as a effect we've m = (4/3) PI R^3 (3000 kg/m^3) = (4/3) PI (15 m)^3 (3000) = 4.2 x 10^7 kg. as a effect the whole capability is, E=a million/2 (4.2 x 10^7 kg) (a million.5 x 10^4 m/s)^2 = 4.8 x 10^15 joules. To be risk-free, enable's think of that 0.5 the kinetic capability is lost to noise, slowing, and fragmentation of the meteoroid in the previous it explodes. that still leaves approximately 2 x 10^15 joules for the explosion, whilst in comparison with approximately 3 x 10^13 joules for the Hiroshima A-bomb. Yielding and envisioned explosive capability, type of, on order of 60 A-bombs, or 500 KT of TNT. It replaced into nearer in effect to an relatively large H-bomb. for each Fragment! it relatively is 30 Tunguska type activities on earth at as quickly as! finally, evaluate for a 2nd that the object have been an merchandise like comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 sending 9, a million kilometer sized products streaming into the earth. thinking our previous calculations, it relatively is 270 Tunguska like activities disbursed everywhere in the earth at as quickly as. specific, the single vast unfavourable experience is stopped however the disbursed destruction remains adequate to annihilate mankind. so which you notice it makes lots extra sense to enhance set up-in a position deflection technologies now particularly than waiting till it relatively is basically too previous due.

I'd let them experience more, not only the end of the world, but everything else as well.

If with certainty, we know the world has come to an end, that's where we see love. For there's nothing else to strive for, than a few more moments of intimacy and affection.
If with certainty, we know the world has come to an end, that's where we treasure. It's a rare sight, a benign one, where humanity is equal and one. It's when people realise how futile their effort is, which only enslaven themselves to their cravings for a better life, when all comes to nought eventually, with or without the world dying. Everyone's as rich, everyone's as poor, and we see charity perhaps, as people reveal the minute amount of benevolence we all have, to make the last days of thy neighbour as painless as possible.

Just my opinions=)

Yeah well the whole notion of "prophecy" is a bunch of crap.

What I think is being left out of this debate is THEIR wishes.. what do the family members want? It seems presumptuous to take it upon yourself to decide whether they should live to see the end or not have to witness it. If the pleaded with me to euthanize them, would I? Probably, although the experience would obviously be emotional torture. Otherwise, it'd be one hell of a show!

Uh... Impact? Lol, interesting question. How do you know the Asteroid would cause lots of pain? And if your family saw you about to kill them, 'casue I dont think killing your whole faimly unaware is very easy... I think they would be more hurt (emotionally) that you are killing them than the alternative. Maybe you should ask them... I don't think they would like you to do so. Would love to hear your thoughts and conlusion.

That's a pretty "Deep Impact" question. Personally, no I would not kill my family. Instead we would be in prayer when it happens knowing that soon we would be in heaven with our Lord Jesus Christ.

One thing though in the real world we live in? This will never happen because God won't let it happen. It's not even prophesied in the Bible to happen.

if you have children, this is a dumb question. the 1st thing you do is try to keep your child alive. the struggle afterward is almost insignifcant in the face of hope. hope that someone will make it.....hope that you a were not so ingnorant to teach your kids that meat comes from the store.....that people suffer sometimes......that if you want to make it you have to work...

I don't have any more right to take their lives than they have to take mine. In that situation, it's up to them to decide how they want to die.
Personally, I'd rather stick around to see the fireworks go off, THEN off myself.

I think I would encourage all to stand out on the front porch and watch it happen because chances are we would never get to see anything that dynamic again !
Although, you might be right about one thing; if you can't kill your own family, who can you kill ?
