I want to get into modeling, but don't know where to start. I'm thirteen, by the way. I've checked out a few websites of agencies in my area, but what should I do before I go to the open calls? I'm not doing this for a full-fledged career, either, it's just something I think I'll be good at (and besides, I'm too young for a career.).

When you're visiting an agent or agents, just make sure that you don't pay any money up front. That's the classic scam. A true agent has an interest in selling you. You are the goods. Other agents might indeed send some of their talent out for jobs, but will make everyone pay up front some sort of fee. They might get you to get your pictures taken at a substantial cost. They'll come up with all sorts of sly ways to make it sound like you're getting into something interesting, so might as well pay a little at the beginning. Those are the agents that won't give you jobs though. Instead of making money off of commissions from the work they give you, they make money off of signing up as many people as possible (which makes it even less sure that you'll get any job with them anyway).

So, look up some agents (internet, yellow pages, asking people who actually model), don't pay anyone any money, and when you find a place that seems right, go for it.

one of the first things you have to do if you plan on doing modeling or acting or anything of that sort is to get a few headshots taken as well as some good portraits... put those together and make a portfolio to take with you when you visit and agency. Good luck!!
